Have you ever noticed that all of the great times you remember with family and friends have revolved around food in some way? Food is not only one of the necessities in life, but it is also one of life’s greatest pleasures. And, there are so many different types of food and such various ways to prepare it that you need never be bored with what you eat. It is always a pleasure to add new tastes and recipes to your dining experiences. That is why trying food from every culture is so exciting. Each culture offers uniqueness in its cuisine that can inspire every cook.
Most cultural cuisines focus on the local food items that are native to where they live. For instance, most Caribbean recipes focus on some type of seafood alongside of food stuffs natural to the Islands. Consider the national dishes of some of the Caribbean Islands – Saltfish and Ackee for Jamaica (which is a combination of cooked salted cod and ackee, a local fruit-a dish that resembles, but does not taste, like scrambled eggs), or Turtle as the national dish of the Cayman Islands. The influences of the Caribbean typically also offer spicier fare than is usual here at home, with hot peppers (like the scotch bonnet pepper of Jamaica or the jalapeño pepper of Mexico) being commonly grown.
The Caribbean is not the only place that offers great cuisine relative to its origins. Thai, Japanese and Asian cooking is becoming very popular outside of their own separate worlds. They offer the unique flavors of various herbs and spices, with curries and other unusual ingredients being prevalent. Many of the ingredients in their dishes have been unfamiliar to many of us up until recently. Consider wasabi (a Japanese condiment made from the root of an herb that has a strong sharp taste almost like horse radish). It is a common ingredient in Japanese cooking.
Mediterranean and European influenced cooking have always been popular. French and Italian cuisine have always ranked high on menus throughout the world. But Spanish, German, Greek, and other European countries have also inspired chefs throughout the world to try their special fare.
Trying new taste experiences from around the world offers us the opportunity to expand our horizons in relation to our menus here at home. As well, it also lets us get to know the habits and lifestyles of faraway places. For instance, learning about Chinese and Japanese cooking teaches us that they tend to eat more fish and rice than we do here at home, or that they may incorporate new or unfamiliar spices into their dishes.
If you are adventurous, you probably like to try all of the food offerings of many different places. Each one offers a new taste that can expands not only your food horizons, but also the knowledge that you have of the world around you.
You can sample many spices from different cultures as a way to enhance and change your everyday meals at home. Try to be adventurous in your cooking and try new things. You may surprise yourself and your family—and open up a new world of flavorful meals.
